Please join us at the garden with local guide Leah Bendlin to learn about mushrooms!We'll begin with an oral "overview to fungi" - learning about their ecological roles and forms, how they eat and reproduce and how to begin the process of identification. Then we'll wander the garden, looking for mushrooms, practicing our new ID skills and discussing the stories and potential uses of the species we encounter. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to bring in their own mushroom field guides for outdoor practice. Leah recommends Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest by Trudell and Mushrooms of Cascadia by Michael Beug.
We’ll sit under the Fireplace Terrace (open on two sides and slats on the other two) for an oral overview. Please be prepared for cold weather, rain or shine, and for walking on dirt trails on hillsides.
Leah Bendlin is an expert taxonomist, aspires to learn the name of every mushroom she encounters, and delights in teaching others. She has special interests in taxonomy, uncommonly known edibles, mycoheterotrophic plants, slime molds, ascomycetes and social justice. She regularly leads mushroom ID classes and walks for various Pacific Northwest organizations and has volunteered as a teacher, identifier and board member of the Oregon Mycological Society.
