Norwegian Skinnfell entails stitching and wood block printing on tanned sheepskins. Traditionally used for an entire family's warm bedding on cold winter nights, skinnfell traps were made from multiple hides that were carefully stitched together and then decorated with motifs meant to convey good wishes to the receiver. In this introductory class, we will turn a single sheepskin into an approximately 22” x 30” bench cover, chair topper, or wall hanging. In addition to wood block printing, students will learn how to hand stitch a bridal edge on their sheepskin. Participants will need hand strength to stitch through layers of sheepskin. Participants who wish to use their own sheepskin should contact the instructor prior to class.
Material fee includes: sheepskin, leather needle, thread, printed handout, use of blocks, paints, etc in class
Student should bring:
Clear plastic quilting ruler
Pencil
Small, sharp scissors
Eyeglasses, if needed
Optional but very useful: leather thimble, small jewelry pliers, metal clips
