This hands-on class bridges the gap between a design concept and a perfectly cut piece of fabric. You will learn how to look past the pretty envelope photo and truly understand how patterns work, ensuring your future sewing projects fit beautifully and come together smoothly.

What You'll Be Doing

• Deconstructing Patterns: Demystify the different types of patterns (commercial, indie, digital/PDF) and what makes each unique.
• Precision Measuring: Learn the correct way to take accurate body measurements so you always choose the right pattern size (which rarely matches retail sizing!).
• Cracking the Code: Translate the map of markings—grainlines, notches, darts, and adjustment lines—so you know exactly what they mean before you cut.
• Blueprint Reading: Walk step-by-step through an instruction guide to understand order of construction and fabric layout diagrams.
• The Perfect Layout: Practice grainline alignment and strategically pinning or weighting pattern pieces onto fabric to maximize efficiency and avoid distortion.

What to Bring

• A Flexible Tape Measure: Please bring a standard fabric/flexible tape measure for the body measurement portion of the class.
• Notebook & Pen: There will be a lot of terminology and layout strategy covered, so you’ll want to take notes!
• Note: Mood Fabrics will provide all practice pattern materials for the classroom exercises.
