Explore the exciting process of screen printing onto paper on this 5-session introductory course, which will run on Tuesdays 4th June – 2nd July 6:00 – 8:30pm.You’ll learn the process of screen printing onto paper and develop your confidence as an independent screen printer. You will learn how to register and layer your designs, and print with multiple colours. You will gain an understanding of the photo stencil emulsion technique and will learn how to coat and expose screens using our UV exposure unit. Your tutor will also introduce you to relevant contextual artists and screen printing terminology.
What experience do I need?
No previous experience is necessary. The course is for beginners, or anyone looking to refresh their skills. Those with previous experience may use the course to develop their skills and become familiar with the facilities at our workshop.
What will I make?
You will produce a series of multi layer screen prints of up to A3 size. There is the option to create graphic or fine art prints as well as greetings cards. Your tutor can show you lots of examples of screen prints at your first session to help you understand the different possibilities.
Who is my tutor?
Carl McCarron is an artist who works primarily with screen printing processes and is fascinated with the idea of fictions and images of illegality. He enjoys toying with the laws of copyright. He is interested in colour and the effects of multiple layers of transparency.
Carl loves to print and works as one of our technicians, supporting our members during open access sessions. He also teaches our monthly Printed By Us screen printing sessions in collaboration with St Georges Crypt, which is part of a recovery programme for people who have experienced complex issues such as addiction and homelessness.
Do I need to bring anything?
All materials are provided; this will include cartridge paper, a range of ink colours, photo sensitive emulsion and all the equipment needed to make screen prints. The workshop also sells a range of printmaking papers should you wish to try something different. Prices range from £1 – £3.20 per sheet. There is also the opportunity to purchase additional screen exposures should you wish to produce more than two designs. One A3 screen coating costs £2.50. It will be useful to bring a portfolio folder along to carry your prints home, we also sell small portfolio folders.

Accessibility
Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. Leeds Print Workshop is based in a basement studio at Patrick Studios, a bespoke venue for artists operated by East Street Arts. It is wheelchair accessible, with a lift, larger than standard doors and accessible toilet facilities. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at [email protected] to discuss any concerns you may have before booking. There is one blue badge car parking space to the side of the building on Rider Street, subject to availability.
Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
