Session Synopsis

Whether it’s in a rich chocolate bar or a warm winter beverage, cocoa is everywhere. Yet, the industry faces significant social, economic, and environmental sustainability challenges. Climate change, deforestation, low income, lack of interest from young generation to become farmer, poor working conditions, and child labor are among the issues affecting cocoa farmers and nature around the world.

The Rainforest Alliance is working to tackle these issues and move towards a more sustainable cocoa sector by developing the new Sustainable Agriculture Standard. The merger of the Rainforest Alliance and UTZ in 2018 was a natural moment for us to combine our experience and develop a strong, forward-looking approach to certification that is fit for these challenges now facing sustainable agriculture and related supply chains.

With around two million farmers and more than 5000 companies around the world joining our certification program in cocoa, coffee, tea, banana, and other cultivate crops, we aim to:

  • Contribute to lifting rural people out of poverty by improving sustainable livelihood opportunities for farmers, workers, and their families.
  • Support farmers to grow better crops for optimum productivity using climate-smart agriculture, which also help them mitigate and adapt to climate impacts.
  • Promote more sustainable land management practices to protect forests, biodiversity, and natural resources.
  • Address human rights abuses like child and forced labor, low wages, poor working conditions, and gender inequality.
