Explore a range of printmaking techniques on our 5 week introductory course.
Mondays 31st October - 28th November 2022
18:30-21:00
This course will introduce you to some of the processes you can access at Leeds Print Workshop and give you the basic skills to continue using them after the course. The tutor will demonstrate:
- Monoprinting - using oil based relief printing inks you will produce one-off multicolour prints working with paper stencils and our presses.
- Collograph - you will use collage to create images that will be printed using our our presses.
- Drypoint - working directly onto a printing plate you will use various mark-making tools and then print using our specialist our presses.
- Linocut - Single colour. Using specialist cutting tools you will be shown how to safely cut lino and print using relief inks, rollers, presses, barens and burnishers.
You will learn each of the processes in a supportive environment with all equipment and materials provided.
What experience do I need?
This course is suitable for complete beginners or people who have done some printmaking before but want a refresher. You don’t need to have any previous experience as the tutor will guide you through each process in a step-by-step way. All the processes lend themselves well to simple image making using pattern as well as representational images so don’t be put off if you don’t feel confident with drawing.
What will I make?
With monoprint and collograph expect to make up to about 20 different A4 prints (on A3 paper) in each session. For drypoint expect to make up to 10 variations of an A5 printing plate on A4 paper. With linocut you would expect to make an A5 printing plate and around 10 copies of the print on A4 paper.
Who is my tutor?
This course is taught by Mick Welbourn and Joanna Wilkinson.
Joanna Wilkinson is a practising printmaker, illustrator and bookbinder. She uses printing, collage, analogue/slow photography and sometimes even old style colouring techniques like felt tips in her work. Joanna has recently completed an MA Creative Practice at Leeds Arts University and is also a Co-operative Member of Leeds Print Workshop.
Mick Welbourn is currently the manager of the printmaking workshops at Leeds Arts University, where he has worked for more than twenty years. Over the years he has taught printmaking to adults as well as to A level, Foundation, Degree and Masters students.
Do I need to bring anything?
All the materials needed to produce the prints described above will be provided for the course. This will include relief inks and rollers, card, plastic, softcut lino and paper to print on. Leeds Print Workshop also has a small stock of materials that you can purchase to take away with you or use as extra materials on the course if you are particularly prolific when making prints. You can also purchase a portfolio folder to take your prints home, or bring one along with you have a folder.
If I can't attend can I get a refund?

Please note Eventbrite’s booking fee is non refundable. By making a booking you are agreeing to our full course terms and conditions which can be found on our website.

Accessibility
Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. Leeds Print Workshop is based in a basement studio at Patrick Studios, a bespoke venue for artists operated by East Street Arts. It is fully wheelchair accessible, with a lift, larger than standard doors and disabled toilet facilities. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at [email protected] to discuss any concerns you may have before booking. There is one dedicated disabled car parking space to the side of the building on Rider Street.
Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
