Explore what becomes possible when everyday people decide where money is spent and how participatory budgeting is used across Scotland.
About this Event

Doing Democracy Differently is our new series of events exploring how Scotland could make political decisions in ways that work better for people and the planet. This second event in this series in Edinburgh will explore participatory budgeting.

Heard of Leith Chooses? That's an example of local, particpatory grant making for charities in Leith, Edinburgh. Participatory Budgeting involves giving everyday people power to choose where budget is allocated and spent. It can be done at the smallest scale within individual neighbourhoods or organisations, up to city and state scale.

So, what becomes possible for our communities and environment in Scotland if young people decided how local budgets were spent?

We'll explore this question and others with a room of young people and guest speakers:

  • Gillian Baxendine - public participation specialist and former Head of Participation and Communities Team at Scottish Parliment
  • Joe Coroneo-Seaman - Edinburgh journalist, originally from Yorkshire, who reports on climate, nature and democracy. He has written from global news site Dialogue Earth and The Edinburgh Enquirer, including a recent report about the mixed progress to rollout participatory budgeting in Scotland, despite successes in Leith and Dundee.

More information about other speakers coming soon...
