About this Event
*THIS IS A FOUR-WEEK COURSE TAKING PLACE WEEKLY IN JULY *
This is special four-week program is taking place over four consecutive Tuesday evenings in July. Each session runs 3 hours for a total of 12 hours of hands-on instruction.
Join us in making your own shallow relief carving in a pre-cut limestone block (8"x8"x4") with a carved area of 5"x5". Over four evenings, you'll work through your design step by step, and walk away with a finished, one-of-a-kind piece of stone artwork made entirely by your own hands.
Working at your own pace and with individual guidance from your instructor, you'll be introduced to the fundamentals of ornamental stone carving using traditional hand tools, including:
- Shallow relief carving and geometric design
- Cutting straight lines with flat chisels
- Modelling shapes with claw chisels
- Stippling for contrast with point chisels
- Finishing details using rifflers
Each technique is demonstrated by the instructor before you execute it yourself.
No prior experience is required. All tools and materials are provided.
Your instructor, Danny Barber, is one of Canada's most accomplished stone carvers, with decades of experience spanning private commissions, public installations, and heritage restoration. His most notable project includes stone replacements for the West Block restoration on Parliament Hill. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to learn directly from a true master of the craft.
You can explore more of Danny's work at barberstonecarving.com.
