Ryan Lytle
Get inspired by the art on view in our galleries, and join exhibiting artist Ryan Lytle for a hands-on introduction to the colorful world of needle felting!
In this workshop, you’ll learn the basics of two-dimensional needle felting and explore how to “paint” with wool using specialized barbed needles. Working on high-density foam, you’ll build your design on a felt backing using vibrant wool roving. Along the way, we’ll cover essential vocabulary and techniques like layering, line work, and color blending, as well as the tools and materials that bring it all together.
You’ll leave with a finished 8x10 felted artwork, a solid understanding of the process, and all the inspiration you need to keep creating on your own.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Ryan Lytle is a sculptor based in Hampton, Virginia. He earned his BA in Studio Art from Christopher Newport University and his MFA from the Rinehart School of Sculpture at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Currently, his work focuses on fiber-based processes such as needle felting and sewing, drawn to the medium’s ability to evoke a nostalgic comfort reminiscent of his extensive childhood stuffed animal collection. Lytle’s inspirations range from mythology and established animal archetypes to nature documentaries and firsthand observation.
