Introduction to Nature Journaling in the Field

When it feels like it is difficult to add in pencil miles in a nature journaling practice, one good trick is to carry a sketchbook or journal when you go outdoors. It helps with remembering the places that you have been and slowing down to notice what is around you.

This outdoor session is a good way to meet others who also share an interest. Whether you’re new to nature journaling beyond your desk space, or you already have a practice, this will be a good way to try your hand at field journaling.

Clara Kuo a community educator, workshop facilitator and a native gardener living in Silicon Valley. In her 9-to-5, she is also a tech worker, focused in software user interfaces, graphic design and human-centered research. These varied experiences translate well into nature journaling.

“Nature journaling is a way to start meaningful conversations about nature —with ourselves and each other. We only need to take time to slow down and observe it,” she says.

Clara is affiliated with the Wild Wonder Foundation (founded in 2022, and inspired by the work of John Muir Laws) and the Santa Clara chapter of the California Native Plant Society. She is completing her Nature Journaler Educator certification and working on a stewardship project with nature journaling. The subject is to investigate urban-natural interactions with water and local wildlife.

When she’s not nature journaling or gardening on weekends, Clara loves to spend time with her two young daughters and taking them out on hikes. Hellyer Park is also a favorite place for the family.

Deb Kramer is the founder and executive director of Keep Coyote Creek Beautiful. As a community organizer, she has drawn thousands of people to the Coyote Creek cleanup events, and has worked closely with many community organizations and agencies. Over the past 10 years since founding KCCB, Deb has brought together over 30 organizations to connect people to Coyote Creek. Previously, Deb was project manager in environmentally-related fields, including water, energy, and waste. In  her free time, she enjoys hiking, backpacking, and hanging out with her husband, dog and grandsons.
