This course is designed for absolute beginners to learn the fundamentals of fine oil painting. Using photographs provided by the instructor, students will be guided through the entire painting process—from sketching the subject onto the canvas to mastering color mixing and brushwork.
With insights from the instructor’s experience painting landscapes en plein air, students will gain valuable techniques to enhance their studio paintings and develop confidence as artists.
Course Overview:
Week 1: Preparing and transferring a photo onto the canvas, learning key techniques to establish a strong drawing foundation.
Color Theory: Understanding oil hues, the warming and cooling of colors, and how to use values effectively in both light and shadow.
Tools & Materials: Exploring the essential tools for oil painting, including palettes, knives, brushes, solvents, and wipes.
Techniques & Application: Learning the difference between opaque and transparent colors, proper brushwork, and the skills needed to create a dynamic painting.
Tool Care: Proper cleaning and maintenance to ensure brushes and supplies last a lifetime.
Each week, students will build on their skills, ultimately creating various “scapes” including:
Skies – Clouds in different conditions: calm, rough, windy, side-lit, and backlit.
Reflections – Capturing light and shadow in water.
Sunrises & Sunsets – Understanding color transitions in atmospheric painting.
Oceans & Harbors – Waves, calm and rough seas, boats, and river scenes.
Buildings & Landscapes – Sunlit structures with shade and cast shadows, live oak trees with moss, and palm trees.
Still Life – Flowers, fruits, shells, and other classic compositions.
Painting should be a fun and rewarding experience! While there are many steps to mastering oil painting, the first and most important is to paint what you love and enjoy the creative journey. This course provides a structured yet enjoyable environment where students will develop their skills and leave with a true sense of accomplishment.
