About this Event
Come enjoy an early afternoon of learning foundational hand embroidery stitches and techniques, and start a spooky embroidery stitch sampler to bring home with you!
We are privleged to have Heather come in to teach us this centuries-old practice. A hand embroidery artist specializing in contemporary use of 17th century needlework techniques, Heather has over 15 years of experience in the field of embroidery. With a background in conservation, the local natural world and landscape is her primary inspiration in her art, while incorperating social and pop culture influences into modern embroidery.
We will learn 6 stitches (and some variations)
- Running stitch
- Back stitch
- Stem stitch
- Chain stitch
- French knot
- Fly stitch
All aspects of the project will be covered in class, but the sampler may be completed at your own pace at home:
- A “stitch sampler” is a great way to get comfortable with embroidery tools (needles, threads, fabric and hoop), while learning how to execute different embroidery stitches. You’ll also learn how to combine these stitches to add colour, dimension, and texture to your projects.
The materials you will be provided in your kits:
- Ground fabric
- Two embroidery needles
- 5” embroidery hoop
- 6 colours of thread
- Sampler design (ready to transfer)
- Instruction booklet with stitch dictionary
- Ribbon for displaying your finished project
Scissors will be provided for shared use, but if you have a pair of sharp scissors please bring them for your own use.
The workshop will take place from 11am to 2pm. Participants are welcome to stick around until 3pm to continue working on their sampler.
