About this Event

This course is the beginners guide to putting things like shelves on walls. You will learn to identify different kinds of walls and learn how to use the correct fixtures on them. This will include learning about hammer drills, masonry bits, rawl plugs and plasterboard fixtures. There will also be a discussion about avoiding cables and pipes. The course will end with using a spirit level to fit a shelf.

The course is designed for beginners

What will I learn?

This course is a mixture of theory and practical skills which will cover:

- A toolbox talk on what you need to fix different types of fixtures to different types of walls : Which drills, drill bits, screws and fixtures and when to use them.

- How to identify stud and brick walls, gaining a basic understanding of their structure.

- Practice using a battery combi-drill, hammer drill and SDS drill.

- Understanding the principles of how to avoid embedded pipes and cables.

- How to mark up accurately, with an interactive demonstration on how to hang a shelf.

- Lots of hints and tips from our experienced tutor!!!

As with all of our courses we try to answer all of the questions we can as we know people come to these courses with a project in mind. There are no silly questions!

What else is included

Another main aim of this course is to empower people to be able to complete their own jobs or projects at home and give them confidence in their own woodworking ability by developing skills. We want to make people comfortable using timber yards, tool suppliers and places such as Leeds Wood Recycling

Who is the tutor?

What do I need to bring?

All tools are supplied. Please wear clothes suitable for dusty work and sensible shoes. We provide the hot drinks and biscuits for the break. Please bring warm clothing – we recommend you bring layers – it can be cold in our workshop even in summer.. It's also a good idea to bring a notepad and pencil so you can make notes!

Where can I park my car or bike?

There is free car parking opposite LWR (it’s free to use for LWR participants.) You're welcome to bring your bike in the warehouse to keep it safe.

A small note
