About this Event
Discover the art of handmade books in this practical and creative bookbinding course designed for beginners and curious makers alike. Through guided projects and hands-on experimentation, you’ll explore the history, materials, and creative possibilities of contemporary book arts while developing your own unique style as a maker.
Over the course, you’ll build essential bookbinding skills, including folding, sewing, glueing, cutting, and confidently using specialist tools and materials. Participants will be introduced to a range of traditional and experimental techniques, including saddle stitch, chain stitch, concertina binding, and or pocketbook structures.
You’ll also create your own hard-cover concertina-bound book while learning the core foundations of bookbinding design and construction. By the end of the class, you’ll leave with a collection of handmade books, practical skills you can continue to develop at home, and a deeper appreciation for the craft of book arts.
What to bring to the first session: any prints, drawing & painting materials or patterned papers you possess. All materials, including paper and further design materials, equipment and tools, will be provided.
