Air steps are a fun and athletic part of Lindy Hop, made famous first at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, then in movies and in New York's Harvest Moon Balls. We will introduce you to basic air steps and help you develop the skills you need to execute them safely. This workshop is intended for Lindy Hoppers who are either completely new to air steps or have experience and want to work on fundamentals air step techniques. It is not necessary to be super athletic to do this workshop- we will be teaching you how to work together effectively with your partner to make it easier for both of you. Be sure to bring water and wear comfortable training clothes.
Your instructors will be Mike Sonder and Jordan PC.
Mike Sonder combines his knowledge of music, functional anatomy, physics, and a plethora of dance forms to create classes that are uniquely insightful, inspiring, and challenging. Mike strives to put himself in his students’ shoes so that he can teach as intuitively and thoroughly as possible. He loves seeing students’ eyes light up when they understand a concept or feel a movement work naturally in their body for the first time.
Mike has taught in 21 countries and counting. He currently teaches Lindy Hop, solo Jazz, air steps, many different Blues styles, Balboa, and more. Mike has not only placed in and won respected competitions across multiple genres but also thrown down hard in unofficial late night dance-offs. Mike lives and breathes dance. He is constantly honing his skills and developing new ideas. If you run into him at a grocery store, an airport, a museum, or a mountain top, you’ll probably catch him dancing.
After a childhood filled with competitive gymnastics, Jordan had all but left acrobatics behind when she found and fell in love with flying trapeze as an adult. She followed her circus dreams to Vermont where she completed NECCA’s professional training program in 2016, specializing in ground acrobatics. She’s spent the last several years continuing to study, perform, and teach various circus disciplines including partner acrobatics, tumbling, trampoline, hand balancing, and flying trapeze. As a coach, she strives to create an environment where every student feels supported and can work in their own way to achieve their goals. She believes in creative problem solving, learning through failure, and laughing loudly whenever possible.
