About this Event

Introduction to Wood Burning (Pyrography) for Beginners

Learn something new and have fun during this hands on workshop. This small class is perfect for those who are new to wood burning and want to explore the art of pyrography. This is also a good opportunity to try the Razer Tip Woodburning tool before you buy one. You will learn step by step how to create a wood burned work of art. Little art experience is necessary just some time and patience. There is something very soothing and relaxing about burning patterns into wood. You will learn how to use the wood-burner safely. We will go over the difference between the wood burning tools that are available. You will learn how to transfer your drawing onto the wood, which wood works best, and how to add a bit of colour. Wood is supplied and the tool that we use is the Razer Tip woodburning system. Feel free to bring your own reference material to trace or draw from or use templates provided. Some people freehand and just go for it and some people use reference material and trace their design. You can also do a bit of both:) Magically everyone does something totally different and unique to them! It's a fun thing to do for a date night or a new activity with friends or family. There are only 4 people maximum in a class, ages 12 and up. If you would like to book an evening with your younger kids check out my website:)

Location: 1721 29 Avenue SW Suite #225, Calgary, AB T2T 1P5

Discover the joy of transforming ordinary pieces of wood into your own unique works of art.

The class is held in my studio, room #225 in the cSPACE Marda Loop building. If you haven't been here before, it is quite often described as a hidden gem! "Situated in a re-imagined historic sandstone building and dynamic inner city neighbourhood, this innovative creative hub and coworking space features retail and exhibition galleries, a theatre and an onsite café."

The building is not officially open to the public on Sunday's so you may have to get buzzed into the building. There is an intercom on the north side of the building where the parking lot is located.

A bit about your instructor, my name is Jen, I have been woodburning for more than a decade, perhaps longer and have been painting and making art of one sort or another my whole life. I received a BFA degree from the Alberta University of the Arts with a major in Ceramics when it was the Alberta College of Art and Design and I previously got my diploma with a major in Sculpture when it was The Alberta College of Art:) I have taught all sorts of jewellery classes at Suzie Q Beads Buttons & Bijoux and taught mixed media adult extension classes at the art college for a couple of years. I love the multi sensory experience of woodburning, you can smell the wood burning, you can hear it sizzle now and again, you can feel the heat of the pen with your fingers and you see the wood change before you as you create your image and make your marks.
