This playful and engaging workshop will provide the foundational and basic elements of play therapy from a child-centered play therapy (CCPT) lens. First, a history of play therapy will be discussed through an interactive and creative activity. Second, we will dive into the therapeutic powers of play, the meaning and function of play, symbolic play, child development, key definitions of play therapy, and the neurobiology of play and play therapy. Third, an overview of key CCPT theoretical principles and philosophy will be explored. Fourth, toy selection and setting up a playroom will be described. Lastly, key components of conducting a play therapy session and basic CCPT facilitative responses will be presented and practiced. Various instructional methods will be used to engage participants, including small group discussions, case examples throughout, video demonstration, and practice/role-play sessions.


Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to describe...

  1. Describe 3 key influences in the history of play therapy and 2 key historical figures of CCPT.
  2. List the 20 therapeutic powers of play.
  3. Recite the definition of CCPT and explain how it differs from other play therapy definitions.
  4. List and describe 2 key concepts of the meaning and functions of play, symbolic play, and child development as it relates to play therapy.
  5. Prepare and set up a playroom with therapeutic toys and materials.
  6. List Landreth's 10 tents for relating to children in CCPT.
  7. List and describe Rogers' 3 views on personality structure in CCPT.
  8. Identify and describe the 6 therapeutic conditions for growth and change in CCPT.
  9. List and describe at least 3 non-verbal facilitative responses/skills used in CCPT.
  10. Identify and describe the basic play therapy facilitative responses/skills of tracking behaviors, reflecting content, and reflecting feeling.
  11. Identify and describe the basic play therapy facilitative response/skill of decision making/returning responsibility.
  12. Identify and describe the basic play therapy facilitative response/skill of self-esteem building/encouragement.

Program Schedule:
Day 1:

  • 8:40-9:00 - Check-in/Sign-in
  • 9:00-12:00 - History, Therapeutic Powers, Play Therapy Defined
  • 12:00-1:00 - LUNCH ON YOUR OWN
  • 1:00-4:00 - Play, Symbolic Play, Child Development, CCPT

Day 2:

  • 8:40-9:00 - Check-in/Sign-in
  • 9:00-12:00 - Playroom, Toys, Facilitative Responses/Skills
  • 12:00-1:00 - LUNCH ON YOUR OWN
  • 1:00-4:00 -Facilitative Responses/Skills Practice

NOTE: There is no official A.M. or P.M. break. A brief, 5-minute break may be taken and made up throughout the workshop.

PLAY THERAPY CE REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS:
Attendees must hold a Master’s degree in a mental health field or are currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program in a mental health field to qualify for a play therapy CE certificate. Additional CE information is provided below.

PARTICIPANT REQUIREMENTS (for virtual/live webinar attendees ONLY):

  • Video participation with camera on for the duration of webinar.
  • Completion of post-test and evaluation prior to receiving CE certificate.
  • ONLY NON-CONTACT CE PROVIDED for live webinar attendees.

Christina Villarreal-Davis, PhD, LPC-S, NCC, RPT-S, is the clinical owner and director of Wellspring of Life Counseling & Play Therapy Center, PLLC located in San Antonio, TX. She has over 24 years of experience in working with children, adolescents, adults, families, and couples. She specializes in working with children utilizing play therapy as well as enhancing parenting skills through Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT). Dr. Villarreal-Davis is a member of the Association for Play Therapy (APT), the Texas Association for Play Therapy (TxAPT), the American Counseling Association, the Southern Association for Counselor Educators and Supervisors, the Texas Counseling Association, the Texas Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and the American Association of Christian Counselors. She served on the TxAPT board for 6 years as their Treasurer and Presidential positions and is also the past chair of APT's Leadership Academy. Additionally, she is an Associate Professor at Liberty University where she teaches courses in the Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. In her free time, Dr. Villarreal-Davis enjoys spending time with her family, playing sports, working out at Orange Theory, outdoor activities, traveling, reading, and learning!
