Meet your anger as a muse! Mock the assholes and yourself, asshole!
The bouffons watch everything. With corkscrewing eyes, they consume and mock everything joyfully and viciously: from war and dating, to home ownership and landlords, to Taylor Swift and Jordan Peterson… to the provincialism of the fashionable Mile-End yoga studio.
Bouffon theatre is a modern form of satyrical clowning which solidified as a genre through the teachings of the French theatre pedagogue Jacques Lecoq (1921-1999), and was later advanced by Philippe Gaulier and others. We laugh at naive clowns, but the pleasure in watching bouffons comes from watching ourselves and our identities, with our naiveté, smallnesses, and hubris, eviscerated in unimaginably scandalous ways.
Following the pedagogy of the Italian pedagogue Giovanni Fusetti, and drawing on Gaulier’s insistence on play, participants of this course will learn bouffon as a collective, ecstatic expression of the human joy of mocking. More simply: we play in groups, and from tuning with others and our own human bodies— and others’ bodies (and with our own bodies through the others’ bodies)— unwriteably absurd, offensive, and hilarious ideas are birthed and shaped into scenes.
This way of devising work collectively can be freeing and easeful for our artistic egos and writerly brains, and is exciting and nutritious for our bodies.
It can also be used individually to devise solo material.

About the teacher:
Stephen Daytime has a diplôme from École Philippe Gaulier and graduated in 2025 from the DESS Marionnettes Contemporaines at UQAM.
He is an ongoing student of Italian theatre and clown pedagogue Giovanni Fusetti, who teaches Lecoq-style pedagogy with a somatic and Gestalt approach. Somatic work has been a part of Steve’s practice since long before he knew it to be to be called that: in 2017 he co-founded Danser Dans L’Noir, a forthnightly free-dance in total darkness, which he run permanently with a small team.
He recently presented Bêtes Parfaites, a modern bouffon show, at La Porte Rouge.
His piece “Amoeba” was featured in the Montreal Clown Festival Gala 2025.
He organizes clown (Peter Sweet) and mask (Sara Corsini) workshops in Montréal under the name Clown + Etc Montréal.
He is currently reworking his solo play Wild Bill and studying puppetry at UQAM, and was thrice a teaching artist at the Labrador Creative Arts Festival.
He has been hard of hearing since birth and now proudly wears Phonak Audeo M90-Rs, which he may let you try if you politely ask. He also works as an assistant to disabled people and as an assistant mechanic on very big ships.

Les bouffons observent tout. Avec leurs yeux perçants, ils consomment et se moquent de tout avec joie et méchanceté : de la guerre et des rencontres amoureuses, à l'accession à la propriété et aux propriétaires, en passant par Taylor Swift et Jordan Peterson... jusqu'au provincialisme du studio de yoga à la mode du Mile-End.
Le théâtre bouffon est une forme moderne de clownerie satirique qui s'est imposée comme un genre à part entière grâce aux enseignements du pédagogue français Jacques Lecoq (1921-1999), puis développée par Philippe Gaulier et d'autres. Nous rions des clowns naïfs, mais le plaisir de regarder les bouffons vient du fait que nous nous regardons nous-mêmes et nos identités, avec notre naïveté, nos petites mesquineries et notre arrogance, disséquées de manière scandaleuse et inimaginable.
Suivant la pédagogie de l'Italien Giovanni Fusetti et s'inspirant de l'insistance de Gaulier sur le jeu, les participants à ce cours apprendront le bouffon comme une expression collective et extatique de la joie humaine de se moquer. Plus simplement : nous jouons en groupe, et en nous accordant les uns aux autres et à nos propres corps humains - et aux corps des autres (et à nos propres corps à travers les corps des autres) - des idées absurdes, offensantes et hilarantes, impossibles à écrire, naissent et prennent forme dans des scènes.
Cette façon de concevoir le travail collectivement peut être libératrice et apaisante pour notre ego artistique et notre esprit créatif, tout en étant stimulante et nourrissante pour notre corps.
Elle peut également être utilisée individuellement pour concevoir du matériel solo.
À propos du professeur :
Stephen Daytime est diplômé de l'École Philippe Gaulier et a obtenu en 2025 un DESS en marionnettes contemporaines à l'UQAM.
Il est l'élève du pédagogue italien de théâtre et de clown Giovanni Fusetti, qui enseigne la pédagogie de style Lecoq avec une approche somatique et gestaltiste. Le travail somatique fait partie de la pratique de Steve depuis bien avant qu'il ne sache qu'il s'appelait ainsi : en 2017, il a cofondé Danser Dans L'Noir, une danse libre bimensuelle dans l'obscurité totale, qu'il dirige en permanence avec une petite équipe.
Il a récemment présenté Bêtes Parfaites, un spectacle bouffon moderne, à La Porte Rouge.
Sa pièce « Amoeba » a été présentée au Gala du Festival de clown de Montréal 2025.
Il organise des ateliers de clown (Peter Sweet) et de masque (Sara Corsini) à Montréal sous le nom de Clown + Etc Montréal.
Il retravaille actuellement sa pièce solo Wild Bill et étudie la marionnette à l'UQAM. Il a été trois fois artiste enseignant au Festival des arts créatifs du Labrador.
Il est malentendant depuis sa naissance et porte désormais fièrement des Phonak Audeo M90-R, qu'il vous laissera peut-être essayer si vous le lui demandez poliment. Il travaille également comme assistant auprès de personnes handicapées et comme assistant mécanicien sur de très grands navires.
