Intro to Laser Cutting at Denelchin Lab

In this workshop you will learn to use laser cutters by creating 2D and 3D artwork. Laser cutters are automated cutting devices that slice through wood and other materials using a high power laser.

Participants will complete two tutorial projects exploring different functions of laser cutters and become familiar with vector drawing software used to design laser cut creations. You will have the chance to create completely original works of art, or download and cut inspiring design from a template library. Upload your designs and watch the laser cutter bring them to life by cuttting and burning details onto 1/8 inch cardboard and birch plywood.

This class is not a good opportunity to attempt a laser engraved photo project. The process for laser engraving photos takes more time than will be available in this workshop. All materials, safety equipment, and safety instruction are provided.

The goal of this workshop is to learn how to safely operate a laser cutter, understand the features and functions of laser cutter, and practice using associated design software, all while expressing your creativity throughout the design process in this hands-on take-home activity.
