Intro to Handbuilding in Clay

In this 3hr Intro to Handbuilding class you will unlock the magic of two incredible handbuilding methods: pinch pots and slab building. By the end of this class you will have created two distinctive pieces that reflect your personal touch. Absolutely no prior experience is needed, however, this is a great refresher course for our novice learners.

We’ll learn the ancient technique of pinch pots by simply pinching and shaping clay, where you'll create either a small bowl or cup. Then you’ll explore slab building – where you'll use templates to cut out pieces and learn how to properly attach and sculpt to make your very own vessel. At the end of this class you will have successfully created at least 2 unique projects.

Once your creations are complete we’ll handle all of the firing and glazing of your pieces. Each piece will covered with a glossy white glaze making your pieces food safe and durable to handle the dishwasher and microwave. In about three weeks you will be emailed for pick up at Studio Sumi.

Supplies needed: None! All materials and clay are provided for including aprons. If you’d like to bring a beverage we are a BYOB studio.
