Intro to Hand Drum & Community Drum Circle

The Sanctuary is pleased to offer an introduction to the world of hand drums with a facilitated drum circle.
Tom Barrett of Sound Travels is bringing his drums for another beginner friendly workshop where we will dive into the world of hand drumming.
If you’ve wanted to try drumming and didn’t know where to start this event is for you.
The class will start with the beginning of how to hold and get the sounds out of the drum and you will be led through some simple patterns then build on that to create an amazing community of rhythmic flow.
Tom is a relaxed and engaging teacher with experience showing people how to play hand drums. You are guaranteed to have fun as we finish the workshop with a facilitated free style drum circle.
Playing hand drums is good for the body, the mind and the spirit. It lowers blood pressure, slows your heart rate and changes your brainwaves. Our brains get stuck in a state of dealing with constant stress and drumming acts like a big reset button to bring you into a more relaxed state.
Drumming is also known to elevate levels of all the “feel good” hormones that improve mood and focus and a regular practice contributes to healthy brain activity.
Most importantly, it’s just a lot of fun. Whether you are interested in using drums as part of a personal meditation practice or want to just jam along with other drummers this is for you.
We’ll talk a little about the effects drumming has on your well being and learn some about the drums themselves but most of all it will be a hands on immersive experience playing the drums
NO EXPERIENCE IS NEEDED. Drums will be provided, but feel free to bring your own to play if you have one.
Tom has introduced a lot of people to hand drumming and enjoys sharing his passion for rhythm and all aspects of drumming, from playing for dancers and jamming in drum circles to using the energy and vibrations of the drum to reach a connection to the spiritual world. Tom has been drumming for over 10 years. He is certified in Reiki and as a Sound Healing Practitioner. In his personal practice drumming is a form of meditation but he likes jamming for fun also. Follow his facebook Sound Travels to find his Sound Bath events.
“Drumming is hardwired into our consciousness from before we were born. Drums speak to us on a primal level. The first senses we develop in the womb are touch and hearing while we are surrounded by that beat of our mother’s heart. We hear and feel the drums and remember the connection.”
