Join us at stARTup Studios for an exciting Intro to Glass Weekend Workshop! Unleash your creativity in this hands-on experience where you'll learn the art of glassmaking, so get ready to gather, shape, and blow glass with the assistance of our highly trained instructor. Whether you're a beginner or have some experience, this workshop is perfect for anyone looking to dive deeper into the beautiful world of glass art. This is our most hands on workshop, allowing you to get more experience and time in the glassblowing studio learning the how's and why's of working with molten glass.
The class will meet Saturday and Sunday from 1pm-4pm
What you will learn:
Saturday Day 1 we will focus on safety and protocols around the glassblowing studio, as well as getting familiar with the equipment and moving around the studio with a hot gather of glass. Getting comfortable with the space is important to unleash your creativity as well as maintaining a safe space while working with others.
You will also be taking your first gathers of glass from our furnace and bring it to the bench to start becoming familiar with a few tools to manipulate the glass. In the first day we will be focusing on gathering from our furnace to manipulate the glass using our tweezers, jacks and blocks to learn how to make paperweights.
Sunday Day 2 we will start by going over some basic safety guidelines of the studio as a refresher and just right into practicing our gathering from the furnace and making jacklines in our glass. (Jacklines are the backbone of the glassblowing process)
We will also start gathering on blow pipes and practice blowing our first bubbles. The goal of the second day will be to get you familiar with the materials and the process of working towards making a cup. (If you can make a cup, you can make a bowl, if you can make a bowl, you can make a plate).
THINGS TO BRING:
1. Paper and something to write with
2. Water Bottle (water available for free from the bar)
3. Cotton clothing and closed toed shoes (NO Sandals)
All objects in this class will be made of clear glass only, this gives you a better sense of how the glass is moving and blowing up without the distraction of colors. This workshop is more about processes and techniques and not about object making (That comes later) You may walk away from this experience with nothing but knowledge about Glassblowing.
