Intro to Glass Enamel Full-Day Workshop with Timothy Laurin

Experience the vibrancy of coloured glass melted onto metal. In this vitreous enamel workshop, each student will make up to three items (ranging from earrings to pendants) by applying glass powders onto copper shapes and firing until the glass melts. We will cover basic metal forming and finishing techniques typical in jewellery making. Along with various enamel application techniques such as sifting, stencil and painting, you will be shown how to fire the work with a simple propane torch as well as with a small kiln. You will also learn how to complete your jewellery with sterling silver findings so that you can wear your finished work for many years to come.

Participants (especially those with limited enameling expereice) are encouraged to attend Tim's artist talk before the workshop from 10:30-11:30am. After the talk will be a 30 minute break for lunch and the hands on workshop will begin at 12:00pm.

Timothy Laurin is a multi-disciplined craftsperson who originally studied at Sheridan College School of Design and later received an MFA from York University. While he works in both clay and glass, he currently is focused on enamelling. Interested in the relationship between shape and colour, his enamelled jewellery beautifully combines these elements of design. His work incorporates both copper and sterling silver.
