Intro to Drypoint Etching (3-week series)

This is a three-part class series is held on three consecutive Sundays, offering a total of nine total workshop hours.

Etchings are a versatile medium that emphasize line work, drawing and detail. Drypoints are made by scratching lines into a flat printing plate, typically polymer (plexiglass) or copper, or even recycled items like Tetrapak containers. The grooves and burs created by these scratches will hold ink and appear as lines or texture on your print, while smooth and untouched areas of the plate are wiped clean and will appear the same color as your paper.

This class is an overall introduction to intaglio printmaking. You'll learn how to create your printing plate; how to ink and wipe your plate; print registration techniques; how to set up and operate the etching press; choosing and preparing your paper; and the versatile range of possible textures achievable using drypoint.

This is a perfect class for students who are brand new to printmaking, but also for relief-based printmakers who haven’t had a chance to try intaglio techniques.
