About this Event

Instructor: Wesleigh Harrison

Following introductions, students will be briefly shown examples of collage art and styles including use of color theory, composition, and surreal/abstract expression. An overview of the collage process, with tips for success, will provide students with structure and techniques to use during their lab creation time, during which they will experiment with layering and following “the next impulse.” Our time together will culminate in naming and showing our art and a ritual closing.

Course Schedule:

Introductions/check in (10 min)

Examples of collage art and styles (what makes it “art”?) (10 min)

Process (demo/explanation, 15 min)

Lab time (1.5 - 2 hours)

Copyright (5 min)

Name pieces and show our art (even if unfinished) (20 min)

Closing: Words with gestures (5 min)

Skills instilled: Awareness of how painting techniques such as composition and color theory work for collage art. Use collage to express a story/narrative, if desired. Gain an understanding of the collage process: how to dissect magazines and books to preserve larger images, cutting techniques, layering practice with use of a camera, following one’s intuition or the “next impulse,” options for glueing down images. Students will be encouraged to think outside the box and create art of their imagination, including surrealism and abstract expressions.

Cost: Each student is asked to contribute $5.00 for the materials, including: poster paper, glue stick, rubber cement, scissors, tape, box.

An exacto knife and cutting pad will be available for precision cutting.

Some magazines will be provided but if everyone contributes there will be more to share and create with!

Students should bring:

• Magazines, coffee-table or photography books, old calendars (for images)!! Good sources are Friends of the Library, Goodwill, garage sales.

• Water, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses as we will be outside.

• Left-handed scissors if you’re left-handed.

Prerequisites: None

** IMPORTANT COVID SAFETY REGULATIONS *** For the safety of our instructors and everyone participating, we are limiting capacity to 5 people and the class will be socially distanced outside. Masks are required. Please take a moment to review our Covid safety accommodations document.
