Intro to Sourdough BreadReady to finally understand sourdough from the ground up? This hands-on Intro to Sourdough Bread Class is designed to give you a complete crash course—from starter to finished loaf—without the confusion.
In this class, you’ll learn exactly how sourdough works and how to confidently create your own bread at home. We’ll break down the science in a way that actually makes sense, so you’re not just following steps—you understand whyyou’re doing them.
You’ll learn how to start and maintain a sourdough starter, including proper feeding schedules, storage methods, and how to keep your starter healthy and active. Each student will go home with their very own starter, taken from our well-established mother starter, Betty—a strong, reliable culture that’s been producing beautiful, lofty loaves for years when properly maintained. Your starter will be provided in a mason jar, along with a feeding chart and detailed care instructions so you can continue the process with confidence at home.
We’ll also cover the full bread-making process, including:
Mixing and handling sourdough dough
Understanding bulk fermentation and proofing
How to build structure and strength in your dough
How to control and adjust sourness levels
When and how to incorporate inclusions (and what works best)
During class, you’ll work hands-on with your own dough, which you’ll take home to bake. Since we are unable to bake on-site, you’ll receive detailed instructions for baking your loaf at home, including how to use a Dutch oven (ceramic-coated or cast iron) as well as alternative open-bake methods.
To help you visualize the final result, each student will also leave with a fully baked sourdough loaf provided during class—so you can study the crust, crumb, and overall structure of a properly baked loaf.
We’ll also go over the tools of the trade—what’s worth investing in and what you can skip—so you don’t waste money on unnecessary equipment.
By the end of this class, you’ll not only have your own starter and dough ready to bake, but you’ll also have the knowledge and confidence to continue your sourdough journey at home.
All supplies are included.
