THE LARAMIE PROJECT Auditions!
Intrepidus Theatre Lab, in association with DIVA Productions, is excited to announce auditions for THE LARAMIE PROJECT, on Friday, March 21st, at 7:00pm at The Olde Brick Theatre, 126 W Market Street, Scranton.
In October 1998, a twenty-one-year-old student at the University of Wyoming was kidnapped, severely beaten, and left tied to a fence in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming. His body was not discovered until the next day. The young man died several days later in an area hospital. His name was Matthew Shepard.
In the aftermath of the crime, Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project made six trips to Laramie over the course of a year and a half. After conducting more than 200 interviews with the people of the town, they then constructed a deeply moving theatrical experience from these interviews, along with their own experiences in Laramie. THE LARAMIE PROJECT is a raw, provocative theatrical production that speaks as much about the entirety of The United States of America, as it is does a small, rural, cowboy town. As one interviewee plainly stated, “We need to own this. We are like this.”
Director Justin John Costello is seeking a company of 10+ Artists to portray 60+ Characters within the production. The audition itself will consist of reading from sides, as well as a movement sequence, as physicality and movement will be a prominent aspect of the production. Due to the mature subject matter, artists should be of ages 21+. On the night of auditions, all are asked to arrive as close as possible to the 7:00pm start time.
Those who are interested in auditioning are encouraged to send an Email to [email protected] in order to receive Audition side packets the first week of March. As Company members will be required to bring to life multiple roles, sometimes in the blink of an eye, having specific sides beforehand will help the Artist get a head start on crafting their characters before the audition itself. There will be additional Audition side packets available at Auditions for those who choose not to peruse them beforehand.
Following auditions, a read through will take place at The Old Brick Theatre. After that, rehearsals will be held sporadically in Kingston, based on the Artist’s availability for the next several months. The rehearsals will then move back to The Olde Brick at the end of June, through the production dates themselves.
This special four night theatrical event of THE LARAMIE PROJECT will take place July 25th-28th at The Olde Brick Theatre in Scranton.
