Materials list

WATERCOLOR PAINTS:

There are many brands of paint that are intermixable and of good quality. My favorites are Holbein, Daniel Smith, M. Graham, a step-up in premium paints would be Winsor & Newton.

Recommended Primaries ~ Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Deep; Cadmium Red Deep, Alizarin Crimson; Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Phthalo Blue;

Optional: Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna & Indigo

*You can minimize ~ use just the underlined paints and you can still mix your Secondary Colors, Oranges, Purples and Greens... but enjoy collecting additional paints as you desire!

PALETTE: I recommend palettes that have lids and sufficient mixing areas. If you are just starting, working small or plein air, a plastic folding palette with thumb-hold works well.

PAPER: Watercolor Pads 9” x 12”, Cold Press 140lb., My favorites are Arches, Fabriano, Winsor & Newton, but Strathmore or Grumbacher is fine. Watercolor Blocks are NOT needed…but a piece of foam core or Masonite that is slightly bigger than your paper is needed for a back board.

BRUSHES: Rounds - sizes #6 & # 12 with tapered tips; Flat - ½” or add 1”; for larger washes you can use 2” wide brushes like a Hake’ brush for costs savings.

OTHER: Pencil, white eraser, small cloth (old rag), painter’s tape, water containers (2 lg. hard plastic cups can work), paper towels.

Bring an adventurous spirit …. love the process!

*** Instructor will also provide fresh botanicals, templates for drawing WC compositions and gift participants with a celebration Presentation Mat.

About the Instructor: Karin Felker Harris is intrigued by the illumination of light and the dance of shadows in the world around her. Her quest is to capture those elements in botanicals, landscapes and still-life paintings.

Karin holds a BFA from Southern Oregon State University. She enjoyed being an art instructor at Marylhurst University & various Art Centers. Galleries Hatfield, Gottlieb and her own gallery, An Artists Place, represented her work in Oregon, where she also participated in Invitational and Juried Shows throughout the Pacific NW.
