UCIMR launches in Ireland the project InTERRActions: a musical dialogue between cultures, 21–24 September 2025
UCIMR – the Romanian Association of Music Performers – announces the debut of the international project InTERRActions in Ireland, organised in partnership with the Contemporary Music Centre Dublin (CMC). Between 21 and 24 September 2025, Limerick, Dublin and Boyle will host four interactive concerts and a conference dedicated to contemporary music and intercultural dialogue.
The events will take place according to the following schedule:
23 September, Dublin – CMC Creative Space, 03:45 PM
The guest artists are flautist Matei Ioachimescu, pianist Horia Mihail, violist Andreea Banciu, cellist Adrian Mantu and pianist Aileen Cahill – all of whom enjoy wide international recognition.
The concerts will feature a selection of works by Romanian and Irish composers of different generations – Doina Rotaru, Șerban Marcu, Mihai Murariu, George Păiș, Anda Ștefania Baciu, Santiago Kodela, Laura Heneghan – alongside landmark pieces from the universal repertoire. The events are designed as a dialogue across time, cultures, and geographical spaces.
The project also includes two podcasts to be released by the end of September, created by pianist Aileen Cahill, researcher-in-residence at the CMC, and cultural journalist Olessea Savvateeva, bringing to the public the perspectives and impressions of the participating artists.
“InTERRActions is a cultural expedition into the realm of contemporary music, bringing Irish audiences closer to Romanian performers and composers of different generations, while also opening space for profound conversations between people and nations through the shared language of sound,” states Diana Gheorghiu, the project’s music curator.
The Romanian Association of Music Performers (UCIMR) is a not-for-profit, public utility organisation, founded in 1995 by the principal violist of the Bucharest Philharmonic, Ștefan Gheorghiu. For 30 years, the association has been dedicated to the development of Romania’s cultural landscape by promoting authentic values and facilitating both national and international artistic exchanges. UCIMR organises annual festivals and tours that promote Romanian artists in international contexts, providing access to new audiences and strengthening European cultural cooperation.
The Contemporary Music Centre (CMC) is Ireland’s national organisation for the support and promotion of contemporary music. Founded in 1986, CMC serves as a resource centre for contemporary musical creation, providing access to archives of scores and recordings, supporting the commissioning of new works, and organising events that connect Irish artists with international cultural networks. Its activity is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland, along with other public and private funders, and benefits from visibility through partnerships with media outlets such as Journal of Music and Irish Times.
This project is co-funded by the Romanian Cultural Institute through the Cantemir Programme – a programme dedicated to the international environment. The Romanian Cultural Institute is not responsible for the content of the project or the manner in which its results may be used. Responsibility lies entirely with the beneficiary of the funding.
HORIA MIHAIL (piano) – A graduate of Boston University, he is one of the most prominent Romanian musicians of his generation. Both a concert soloist and refined chamber musician, as well as a partner of prestigious orchestras, he has performed on major European and American stages, while remaining a constant presence in festivals throughout Romania. His repertoire spans from classical to contemporary, while his discography and large-scale projects – such as the tours Duel of the Violins, Enescu’s Violin, and Travelling Piano – have brought him significant recognition from both audiences and critics.
MATEI IOACHIMESCU (flute) – Trained at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, he is acclaimed for his extraordinary interpretative versatility, enabling him to move with ease from Baroque and modern repertoire to innovative cross-over projects. He performs as both soloist and chamber musician on prestigious stages across Europe and Japan, while also teaching at the West University of Timișoara.
ADRIAN MANTU (cello) – He studied at the National University of Music Bucharest and the Royal Academy of Music in Dublin, building an international career as a soloist and pedagogue. He is a founding member of the ConTempo Quartet, which this year celebrates 30 years of artistic activity. For their contribution to the Irish music scene, the members of ConTempo Quartet were awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the National University of Galway in 2016, and in 2022 were decorated by the President of Romania with the Order of Cultural Merit.
ANDREEA BANCIU (viola) – Trained in Bucharest, London, and Madrid, she is a founding member of the ConTempo Quartet and teaches viola and chamber music at TU Dublin and the Royal Irish Academy of Music. The Quartet, celebrating 30 years of artistic activity, holds a world record of 15 international awards in the chamber music category. For their contribution to the Irish stage, the ConTempo members were awarded Doctor Honoris Causa by the National University of Galway in 2016, and in 2022 were decorated by the President of Romania with the Order of Cultural Merit.
AILEEN CAHILL (piano) – A graduate of the Royal Irish Academy of Music and TU Dublin Conservatory, she frequently performs in recital alongside violist Andreea Banciu within the Duo Anima, exploring both well-known and lesser-known repertoire. In addition to her concert activity, Aileen has taught at TU Dublin and Maynooth University and is currently researcher-in-residence at the CMC, contributing to the Amplify podcast series.
