Oakland, CA
June 18th- 21st, 2026
Professional development for educators who want to bring more play, connection, and embodied learning into their classrooms and communities — for their students and themselves.
Training Overview
The InterPlay in Education Certificate Weekend is a four-day, 20-hour, hands-on training for anyone who facilitates learning — K–12 teachers across all subjects, community educators, teaching artists, youth workers, and facilitators in non-traditional settings.
You'll learn simple, body-based practices that bring more play, connection, and embodied learning into your classroom and community — practices that work for your students and restore you in the process.
Why This PD Is Different
Most professional development leaves you with a to-do list. This weekend will leave you with something rarer: practices that replenish you AND your students, all at once.
You'll spend four days reconnecting with your own creativity, play, and body wisdom — and those same practices are exactly what you'll bring back to the room.
No prior experience required. No special equipment. Just a willingness to play.
What is InterPlay?
Developed in 1989 and now practiced around the world, InterPlay is an active, creative system for unlocking the wisdom of the body. Through simple, incrementally taught practices — combining movement, storytelling, and play — InterPlay helps people reconnect with what they already know, build community, and move through the world with more ease and confidence. It's been used with elders and young children, in classrooms and community settings, in healthcare, social justice work, and professional development.
The full InterPlay system includes 16+ forms and 8 tools — most people encounter them gradually over years of practice, or through the full Life Practice and Leader Training Program. For this certificate, the facilitators have hand-picked the three forms and one tool most immediately applicable to educational settings — so you can start using them right away."
What You'll Learn — and Be Ready to Teach
You'll leave this weekend certified to teach three of InterPlay's 'greatest hits' — practices that work across a wide variety of educational contexts — plus one powerful tool from the InterPlay framework. And you won't just learn them: you'll practice teaching them to your peers during the weekend, so you leave with real confidence, not just a certificate. You'll also get a taste of additional forms and tools from across the broader InterPlay system — introduced throughout the weekend but not part of the teaching certification itself.
A warm-up practice
For getting a group in sync — perfect for opening a session, navigating transitions, or pulling people back into the room after heavy thinking or a break.
A storytelling practice
Builds connection while helping students link personal experience to course content — flexible enough for ice breakers, brainstorming, and beyond.
A leading and following practice
Flexible enough to explore dynamics that are hard to talk about but easy to experience: power, trust, control — and surprisingly adaptable to the content you teach.
A “body wisdom” teaching tool
A brief, structured teaching tool for helping people tune in to, and make decisions based on, the intuitive wisdom of their own bodies.
How the Weekend Works
This isn't a sit-and-watch training. You'll experience each practice as a participant first, then learn the step-by-step instructions to teach it to others — so by Sunday, you're ready to lead these practices in real life teaching and learning situations.
The weekend also includes a Saturday evening community gathering — a joyful InterPlay tradition — where a wider community joins you to witness what you've learned and play alongside you.
