Join us in remembrance of those who have lost their lives to accidental overdose and/ or drug poisoning. #TogetherWeCan come together as a community to help people home and prevent the crisis that continues to sweep across Canada, advocating for support, policy + community changes that will build stronger and more resilient Cities.
On International Overdose Awareness Day, and every other day, we are here for the family, the friends and the allies of those who have lost their lives, as well as for those who continue to be at risk of the toxic drug supply. We invite folks to bring a picture of a loved one they have lost to accidental overdose or drug poisoning to hold during the event, and we will be providing locks for individuals to place on the HOPE Sign during our remembrance ceremony.
1000 - 1030
Anyone interested is welcome to join us at the Tennis Courts at Riverside Park where we will be painting 125 broken hearts to represent the lives lost from 2023 - current. We will work our way down the path to the Sandman Centre Parking lot, to the HOPE Sign where we will have a conversation and memorial to recognize the significant importance of this day and what it means for our City, Province and Country as a whole.
1200 - 1320
We will have speakers from PWLLE, Moms Stop the Harm and the Kamloops Women's Centre. There will also be booths set up with Interior Health, BC Schizophrenia Society and KWC to provide more information on the important work that is taking place in the community to reduce harm for those who are using substances and experiencing mental health challenges.
We are also supporting PWLLE to mobilize their own coalition for the Kamloops area to become the advocate leaders in the community for IOAD, International Harm Reduction Day, Global Hepatitis Day, Support Don't Punish and so much more. Giving support to those most impacted, using their voice, educating the community as a whole on the lived experience of mental health and substance use and advocating for better supports, policies and change that will make a true difference in the Kamloops Community.
1320 - 1350
We invite individuals to take a lock and write the name of their loved one on it, placing it on the HOPE Sign. After the locks are on we will give a moment of silence, remembering those who have gone too soon.
1350 - 1400
The event will wrap up
1400 - 1500
KWC will invite Media to carry out interviews and ask questions.
