The International Medieval Congress (IMC) is set to take place at the University of Leeds, providing a comprehensive platform for interdisciplinary discussions regarding all aspects of Medieval Studies. As the sixth fully-hybrid event, IMC 2027 will bring together scholars from across the globe, encouraging engagement from diverse geographical contexts and time periods. The thematic focus for this year’s congress is 'Communities', exploring the dynamics of groups of individuals, their shared experiences, and how they define themselves in the face of various challenges over time.
This year’s theme delves into the multifaceted nature of communities, which may be defined through ethnic, linguistic, social, political, professional, spatial, and religious identities. The complexity of these identities often leads individuals to belong to multiple communities simultaneously, presenting both advantages and conflicts. IMC 2027 aims to dissect how these communities are defined in contemporary contexts and the methodologies employed to analyze them, incorporating multidisciplinary perspectives. Topics of interest include the emergence and maintenance of communities, their legitimacy and value, the role of memory in consolidating collective identities, and the interactions between different communities. Scholars are invited to submit papers that reflect on these themes, particularly those that bring under-represented perspectives to the forefront, in any major language. The coordination of this event will be overseen by Cosmin Popa-Gorjanu from the '1 Decembrie 1918' University of Alba Iulia, ensuring a rich and engaging discourse among participants. The IMC welcomes participation from a broad audience including PhD scholars, with a particular outreach to regions such as the UK, Ghana, and Uganda.
