Join Young Professionals in Foreign Policy: Los Angeles for an engaging, informal evening with Erin Levi, a New York Times–published travel writer and editor with a passion for uncovering offbeat stories and underrepresented places. A recognized expert on Bhutan, Erin has written for TIME, BBC Travel, Lonely Planet, Wine Enthusiast, and many other outlets, with her expertise also featured in National Geographic and Travel + Leisure.

Currently serving as the English Section Editor of the Bukharian Times—the oldest newspaper serving the Bukharian Jewish diaspora in the United States—Erin brings a unique perspective shaped by her academic background in Middle East and Central Asian Security Studies from the University of St. Andrews and her BA from Georgetown University. Her connection to the Bukharian community and to Central Asia more broadly informs much of her work, blending journalism, history, and cultural storytelling.

Erin will speak about her career path and evolution as a journalist, the realities and challenges of the profession—from managing finances to maintaining consistency—and the unique aspects of her work, including reporting on countries and communities that are often overlooked. She will also reflect on formative experiences, including leading a YPFP delegation to Bhutan in 2017 during her time as YPFP NY’s Programs Director, where the group was granted an audience with the country’s then–Foreign Minister.
