On Saturday July 6th at Kenny Dorham's Backyard (1106 East 11th) the International Grooves series is very proud to present a Sufi Celebration with the internationally acclaimed Ustad Nizami. Arslen Metoui will warm the stage with a set of Arabic jazz fusion performed on the kanun, a rare North African stringed instrument, with Mashal Awais accompanying on the bansouri (Indian bamboo flute). 7-8:30 Arslen Metoui and Mashal Awais

*Arslen Metoui is from Tunisia and plays Arabic jazz fusion on the rare north African kanun, a type of large zither with a thin trapezoidal soundboard that is famous for its unique melodramatic sound. Mashal Awais is from Lahore, Pakistan and plays the North Indian bamboo flute, the bansuri.

*Ustad Ghulam Farid Nizami, a 17th-generation musician and a descendant of Mian Tan Sen, court musician of 16th century Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great, is one of the foremost musicians of Pakistan. In 2008 Ustad Nizami came to the United States as a Fulbright Scholar to teach music at the University of Texas and in 2009, understanding that instruction is the key to protecting an ancient musical tradition that is being lost, Ustad Nizami founded the Nizami School of Music in Austin, Texas in 2009. be presenting their unique style of Sufi qawwali music accompanied by several of his students. Other performers include the great Faraz Nizamii on harmonium, Raviteja Nulu on Tabla and Mario Garza, and Srajan Bhagat on supporting vocals
