About this Event
International Day of Sites & Monuments
Join us for a Cultural Heritage Tour of one of Philadelphia’s most iconic landmarks. See how the Fairmount Water Works continues to meet the challenges of changing times —from a public health crisis in the 1800s, through the changing climate of the 21st century.
Ellen Freedman Schultz will show rarely seen “before” images of the late 20th century rehabilitation of the site, reaffirming that the historic Fairmount Water Works still stands as a beautiful and enduring symbol of the city’s commitment to providing clean public drinking water.
Schultz provides expertise to the Philadelphia Water Department’s (PWD) Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center (FWWIC) in strategic planning, development, and implementation of water education that integrates the historical/technological significance of the FWWIC and environmental policy, research, planning and waterway protection. She has a Master of Science Degree in Historic Preservation from the University of Pennsylvania and has over two decades of experience teaching an architectural history and history of preservation course for Bucks County Community College.
