Connecting Science, Policy and Practice

We are delighted to invite you to the International conference on smart cycling 2026, taking place on 25 March 2026 at the University of Twente in Enschede, the Netherlands. This one-day event marks the conclusion of the European MegaBITS project (Mobilizing Europe’s Green Ambitions through Bicycle & ITS).

Bringing together policymakers, industry, cities, and researchers, the conference will serve as a meeting point for everyone working to make cycling smarter, safer, and more accessible through ITS innovation and data-driven solutions.

What to expect

The conference offers a full day of plenary sessions, parallel tracks, and networking opportunities, such as:

• Plenary session: the day will open with a Q&A with key figures in the field of cycling and ITS, offering different perspectives from policy, industry and practice. This will be followed by an inspiring keynote from a leading scientist in smart cycling, highlighting the latest research and its relevance for future cycling policies.

• Breakout sessions: Participants can choose from a variety of sessions - some hands-on, some strategic, others scientific - that provide both knowledge and practical tools. Topics include:

• Lessons learned from MegaBITS implementations across Europe;
• How to integrate ITS into cycling policy;
• Sharing lessons on using Floating Bike Data;
• Opportunities for cities to strengthen their "cycling & ITS reflex".

• Wrap-up: the conference concludes with a dynamic wrap-up session, where the main lessons and insights from all sessions will be brought together.

• Networking & exhibition: connect with peers from across Europe during breaks, lunch, and the closing reception. Project partners and companies will showcase their smart cycling implementations or products.

• Additional: on 26 March 2026, the conference will be followed up by a meeting day of the NECTAR network on Smart Cycling. This day focuses on the role of digital infrastructure, smart cycling systems, and data in shaping future cycling policy and behaviour.
