William Bradley Fuqua, M.D. age 87, of Tallahassee, Florida passed away on Thursday, September 29, 2022.
Dr. William B. Fuqua, known to his friends and family as Bill,Dad, or Papa, was born in Birmingham, Alabama on October 6, 1934. He was a lifelong fan of Auburn University, there he completed his undergraduate studies and played clarinet in the marching band. He went on to University of Alabama, where he attended medical school with an internship at William Beaumont General Hospital, El Paso, Texas and residency at Letterman General Hospital, San Francisco, CA.
COL Fuqua served on active duty with the US Army for 14 years with assignments in Vietnam, where he received the Bronze Star, in Germany and in San Francisco as Chief of Pathology at Letterman General Hospital. He retired from the Army Reserve in 1994 after his last assignment as a consultant in pathology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and from Pontiac General Hospital in 1995 after a 20-year career in the Pathology Department.
At Pontiac General Hospital, he served as Chief of the Medical Staff and Chairman of the Medical Education Committee. He was a member of the Oakland County Medical Society Board, the Great Lakes Quality Assurance Board and served on the OHEP board for 15 years, serving three years as its president. He was on the clinical faculty of Oakland University and Wayne State University and was a faculty member of the College of American Pathologists Laboratory Inspectors Training Program.
He and his wife Bertha retired to Cape Cod and opened Four Porches, a Bed and Breakfast, in Brewster, MA. They also served as a host couple for Educational Opportunities, a Christian travel organization. They served in Israel, Austria, and Germany.
After the passing of his beloved wife in 2005, Bill continued his love of teaching, serving as a docent with the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History and encouraging the visitors to the museum and his 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren to learn more about the world around them. Bill was a lifelong learner attending OLLI classes at Florida State University for many years.
He was kind, funny, full of grace motivated by love and his faith in Christ.
Bill was predeceased by his wife, Bertha, his son, Bradley Fuqua and his granddaughter Elly. He is survived by his daughters, Rev. Betsy Ouellette (David Zierden) of Tallahassee, FL, Patti Wilson (Bill) of Boca Raton, FL and Martha Lemondes (John) of Jamesville, NY. Papa will be missed by his 13 grandchildren, his 4 great grandchildren and thousands of friends and like-family members around the world.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Good Samaritan United Methodist Church in Tallahassee, FL or Northside United Methodist Church in Brewster, MA. Please join us for a memorial service at Good Samaritan UMC, 3720 Capitol Circle S.E. Tallahassee, FL on October 10th at 11 am.
