It isn’t easy to grow old. In the case of Walter Franzen in the new play, When Pigs Fly, the process is a particular nightmare. Now in his late seventies, Walter’s life is falling apart and he is becoming the stereotypical grouchy old man. He is alienating those he loves and is jeopardizing a marriage of over forty years.Even the lodge which Walter has run since his retirement is being threatened by a powerful and unscrupulous neighbour, Rudyard Flack. Rudyard wants to steal Walter’s property and is willing to do so by any means possible, even violence.
Enter an unlikely hero, a grandson Toby, who arrives to help. Still in his late teens, Toby is willing to go to the wall for his beloved grandpa. Toby’s courage and good nature show Walter the way to redemption. He forces Walter to face his demons as the two battle against their evil nemesis. It is a heartwarming comedy for the whole family.
