Interdependance Day! 🩵
What is the relationship between independence and interdependence?
On July 4th we celebrate independence as a nation. As children in America, we are taught the stories of our liberation from tyranny. The story of our forefathers that is steeped in myth, music, hot dogs, apple pie, potato salad, potato chips, checkered tablecloths, lawn chairs and blankets on the grass, family and fireworks. It’s an underdog story of courage and optimism, integrity and high ideals: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It’s all true and it’s all not.
Looking around today, I see both the beauty and the wreckage. The glory and the shame. How very like ourselves and our lives is our country and our world. The dreams that push us to grow and connect and the greed and fear that push us into separation and ruin.
The Native American cultures and peoples that we allowed ourselves to demonize so we could take what was theirs. Slavery. Prejudice. The oppression of women. The dehumanizing of men. The destruction of our natural world.
Independence did not save us the way it was supposed to, the way we were taught it would.
And yet.
Life is experiential and experimental. Trial and error is how we learn. The past is information. “We win or we learn. There is no failing,” a great heart shared with me.
And that takes me, finally, to interdependence. What does it mean if we are not separate? If what we do to others, we do to ourselves? Both the best and the worst. And everything in between.
Today, in our dance, we might choose to celebrate connection. To ourselves, each other, the planet, the universe. The probable possibility that we matter no matter what. Our love, our lives, our choices. We matter to the entire world and the entire world matters to us. We are not alone. Ever.
We celebrate hope.
