We are so VERY excited to welcome Samuel Newman from the "other" Portland for this mug-focused daylong workshop at our Portland MAINE studio :-)This one-day intensive workshop focuses on functional form development through throwing, trimming, altering, and handle-building demonstrations. Participants will explore iterative design theory and pot composition centered around three core forms: Calibration Mug, Jigsaw Mug, and Maker’s Mug. The workshop emphasizes gesture, movement, and the relationship between lip, foot, handle, and body.
Calibration Mug — A form refined through sustained repetition, exploring how rib-altered surfaces create movement and rhythm on the mug body. Developed across multiple iterations in porcelain — a clay whose responsiveness captures the sharp edge and gesture of each rib stroke. The handle is deliberately calibrated to echo the undulating surface.
Jigsaw Mug — Named for the agile, multi-faceted nature of a jigsaw, this form is designed to reward every viewing angle. Organic swoops and deliberate planes draw the eye through the handle, foot, lip, and body — each face offering a different composition.
Maker's Mug — The result of a five-year iterative design study, thrown in small batches of five to ten and refined through reflection on proportion, gesture, and movement. Its cascading design emerged through trial and error and responds beautifully to soda atmospheric firing. It's called the Maker's Mug because it represents the experience of making — and because makers instinctively pick it up and start dissecting how it was built.
