About this Event
Join us on Thursday, March 6, at 6:30 pm at Textile Arts Center for a lecture by Michelle McVicker.
Michelle McVicker, a fashion historian specializing in Latinx material culture, has had intimate encounters with garments in both art and historical museum contexts. This talk focuses on a series of research case studies of clothing worn, designed, and/or constructed by Latinx individuals within fashion history. As her own Latinx sartorial participation has been excluded from fashion museology in both narrative and physical form, McVicker explores how her personal experience has informed her professional and academic career.
Michelle McVicker is an Associate Collections Specialist at the Antonio Ratti Textile Study and Storage Center at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. She previously worked at El Museo del Barrio, The Museum at The Fashion Institute of Technology, The National Museum of American History, The Fabric Workshop and Museum, and The Costume Institute.
This lecture is part of the History and Conservation period of the Artist-In-Residence program at Textile Arts Center.
TAC AIR combines studio access with a rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum, and regular critical dialogue, providing residents an opportunity to learn and explore the textile medium, and an alternative to traditional higher education programs. The residency culminates in a group exhibition produced and hosted by TAC. Since 2010, TAC AIR has graduated over 100 artists and designers whose work continues to further textile art within the fashion, fine arts, design, and art education fields.
