Golden Eagle Audubon will be venturing out into the open foothills above Boise to listen to our harder to see sparrows. This field trip is intended for more advanced birders interested in focusing on sparrow and other grassland bird vocalizations. This area is open, exposed and may be hot and sunny depending on the weather. We will start off with an uphill hike for over a half-mile before it levels out to an old road. After one mile we will then descend down to the creek to bird in the riparian area where we should be able to hear orioles, chats and warblers. This will be a slow paced hike but good physical condition is recommended.
Wear shoes with good traction, bring water, snacks, binoculars, a hat and hiking poles if desired.
Group size will be small to allow for better listening and learning.
Target species include: Grasshopper Sparrow, Lark Sparrow, Western Meadowlark, Lazuli Bunting, Western Kingbird, Horned Lark, Brewer's Sparrow, Vesper Sparrow, etc.
Familiarity with common species will be helpful.
All participants under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult.
No dogs please.
There is a vault toilet at the trailhead.
Meet at the Miller Gulch Trailhead on Bogus Basin Road at 6:00 am.
