About this Event

Instagram for the Fine Art Photographer is a workshop that will cover everything from the basics of posts and reels to vetting open calls found on Instagram. Emily Sims, Aidan Avery, and Casey Olson can’t wait to share some insights and help fine art photographers tailor their Instagram use to get the most out of it.

  • Emily will talk about tailoring your usage to fit your goals, apps that can help you showcase your process and work on the platform, and how to build a community on Instagram.
  • Casey Olson will show you how to engage with an audience, explain how Instagram has helped her personal business (Casey Olson Designs) flourish, and give a brief rundown of some of the tools to help you do this too.
  • Aidan Avery will address finding open calls on Instagram and walk you through his process of vetting open calls for his page and newsletter, Photo Calls for Entry. He will focus on how to verify reputable sources, how to identify which calls to enter, and how to use Instagram to help you connect with opportunities.

The evening will include time to tour AZPA’s annual Members’ Exhibition, light snacks/beverages/wine, and small prizes throughout the evening.

The event will be from 5pm – 7pm and the gallery will be open from 4pm – 9pm.

The event is open to the public, registration is free for AZPA members and $20 for non-members (that can be applied toward AZPA membership if the attendee wishes to become a member).

About the Artists

Emily Sims found her way to Arizona from Rockton, Illinois via the United States Air Force. She was an all-source intelligence analyst stationed at Davis-Monthan AFB. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Business Administration from American Military University. After the military, she lived in various places for work before returning to Arizona. Emily was always interested in viewing photography but didn’t start practicing until 2019. She is currently serving on the board of Arizona Photography Alliance helping to promote a fine art photography community in Arizona.

Her work won a 1st place award in the 2020 International Photography Awards, a Top 5 Jury Pick in the 2020 International Photography Awards, and multiple honorable mentions. Additionally, she received an honorable mention in the 2020 Monovisions Photography Awards. She has sold work at the LA Art Show from LACP’s booth space, licensed images as album art, exhibited at LACP, SE Center for Photography, The Curated Fridge, Herberger Theater Center, Art Intersection, and more. Prints of “Monument Valley: Neo-Noir” were used to raise money for people in need of glasses through New Eyes. Most recently, her work was selected by Ken Light and was included in Art Intersection’s “Picturing Resistance” at Gallery 4 in HD SOUTH Gilbert Museum.

Aidan Avery is a photographer based in Tucson, Arizona. His work has appeared in the New York Times, as well as shown at the Center for Contemporary Art (Carmel, CA), the Center for Photographic Art (Abilene, TX), the Albuquerque Museum, and elsewhere. He has an M.F.A. from the University of Arizona, where he studied creative writing and photography.

Outside of his artistic practice, Aidan works at the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson. He also runs an Instagram account and email newsletter dedicated to sharing opportunities for exhibition, publication, grants, residencies, and more with photographers.

Casey Olson (@reminiscement on Instagram) can show you how she has actively kept a large local audience engaged for years. Casey will walk you through some of the things she has done on Instagram to brand herself and market her business, Casey Olson Designs. She will talk about how successful marketing has enabled her to lead a photo walk in Tempe sponsored by Fujifilm and utilize her skills to photograph for the Arizona Department of Health Services, Katie Hobbs, and more.
