Join the Georgia Trust and Inherit Georgia in celebration of Black History Month with a guided walking tour of Atlanta's Auburn Avenue, led by LeJuano Varnell, Executive Director of Sweet Auburn Works.
Since 1906, Auburn Avenue has been a center of entrepreneurial activity, drawing business owners whose efforts helped establish the avenue as a thriving commercial district. This economic energy earned Auburn Avenue the nickname “Sweet Auburn,” reflecting its significance as a hub of success and opportunity. Explore the legacy of these early entrepreneurs and the historic buildings that housed their enterprises. Highlights of the tour include the Odd Fellows Building, a prominent African American fraternal organization that is currently undergoing an extensive restoration; the Atlanta Life Insurance Building, home to one of the most successful Black-owned businesses of its time; and the Southern School Book Depository Building, a notable site in the district’s history, designed by architectural firm Hentz and Reid.
Sweet Auburn Works (SAW) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation, revitalization, and promotion of the historic Sweet Auburn district. This district, which includes Auburn Avenue, is renowned for its deep cultural and historical significance, particularly as a center of African American business, activism, and culture during the 20th century.
