Basic Information about Albinism

Albinism is a rare, genetic defect that causes there to be no pigment in skin, hair and eyes. As a result, the skin is white and the eyes are often light blue.

People with Albinism also have poor to very poor vision (10%)

In Tanzania, the risk of Albinism is more than 15 times higher than in Europe.

Albinism occurs worldwide, regardless of nationality or gender.

The situation of people with Albinism in Africa is critical:

• Sunshine brings skin sun-burns and a very high risk of skin cancer.
• Local witch doctors hunt them for their body parts.
• Difficulty in social integration due to discrimination and exclusion.

Inside the Same

As we are living in Europe, it is hard for us to imagine the condition in which people with Albinism are living in Africa. Today, we are honored to present you Désirée Schoonen, Executive Director of Inside the Same, a Dutch foundation specialized in helping improving the life condition of people with Albinism in Tanzania. Désirée will bring us the true story about people with Albinism fights for life.

What the money do?

• €20 for 1 year supply of suncream
• €250 for providing a life-saving dermatological surgery to treat skin cancer
• €700 for providing a cryogun used by Skin Cancer Prevention Clinics in Tanzania
• €2500 scholarship, to support a student

Why do we organize this event?
