Take a walk behind the famous 10-foot wall of Girard College. As we stroll around this 43-acre oasis in the middle of the city, we’ll talk about Stephen Girard, the 19th-century multi-millionaire who left his fortune to create a school for financially-disadvantaged children; about the generations of students who have lived and learned here (and still do); and about the powerful civil rights activism that led to the school’s desegregation. We’ll step inside some truly monumental buildings and end at the school’s museum where visitors can explore more on their own.Our tour will start by the Girard College sign, just outside the Girard College gate at the corner of Corinthian Ave and Girard Ave. The walk leader will be wearing a Girard College T-shirt. The walk will end at Founder’s Hall, just inside the front gate of the College.

WALK NOTES:
- WALK LEADER: Kathy Haas, Director of Historical Resources at Girard College
- MEETING PLACE: By the Girard College sign, just outside the Girard College gate at the corner of Corinthian Ave and Girard Ave. This is near 15 & 33 bus stops or a 1/2 mile walk west from the Girard stop on the Broad Street line. The walk leader will be wearing a Girard College T-Shirt.
- Founder’s Hall has 11 stairs to enter. There is a wheelchair lift to access the first floor (last stop on the tour) but stairs are unavoidable to access the 2nd floor museum (an optional post-tour stop).
- The total walk distance covered will be about a mile and is on flat, paved surfaces. Because we’ll be off the city streets, noise and congestion should be minimal.
