About this Event

Inside the Cartoonist’s Studio: Comic Book Artist & Writer Howard Chaykin (American Flagg!) In Conversation with comics artist and novelist Bob Fingerman (Minimum Wage) and PRS Exec Director Dennis Bartok

Please join us for the second event in our continuing PRS series Inside the Cartoonist’s Studio, celebrating the work of comics artists, illustrators, graphic novelists & cartoonists in the PRS Auditorium.

Widely hailed as one of the most influential comics artists of the past 50 years, Chaykin’s phenomenal body of work includes DC Comics’ World of Krypton, The Shadow and Blackhawk miniseries, and Hawkgirl; and Marvel Comics’ Star Wars adaptation, Marvel Team-Up (Spiderman), Hulk, Wolverine/Nick Fury, Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D., among many others.

In 1983, he created his ferocious sci-fi / political satire American Flagg!, set in 2031 when multiple disasters have forced the U.S. government and major corporations to relocate to Mars. His recent series Hey Kids! Comics!, launched in 2018, is a savagely funny look at the often-mercenary rise of the American comic book industry.

Howard Victor Chaykin is a longtime veteran of the comic book business. As a cartoonist--both writing and drawing--he has been a major influence on the direction of comics, referred to frequently as one of the primary architects of the modern comic book. His signature creation American Flagg! introduced a new level of narrative complexity, depth of character, and point of view in its text, not to mention a previously unseen level of design and craft to the visual nature of an all too frequently staid and timid medium.

Chaykin’s The Divided States Of Hysteria enraged an entire new generation of the willfully ignorant who might have had a better case if they’d actually read the damned book. The third and final arc of Hey Kids! Comics!, a fictionalized history of the comic book business, a love letter written with just a frisson of acid in the ink to the field he’s called home for five decades is in production now. Volumes one and two are available. What are you waiting for, for heaven’s sake?

Suggested donation: $15 (in-person and Zoom option available)
