Imagine your mind, your brain, your head is a physical space. What would you find? Is it open or closed? Light or dark? Comfortable or distressing?
Curated by Sophie Flack, invited Fountain House artists to create work that represented or expressed what it would be like if the viewer could take a tour of their brain and to reveal a part of themselves no one can see.
"I was so honored to be asked to curate this exhibit. I had the privilege of visiting the Fountain House studio so I knew going in the level of talent, but I wasn’t prepared for how the artists really went for my prompt. The works are so raw and visceral and sometimes grotesque and unapologetically honest about what it’s like to be human; I was brought to tears. The artists often pushed themselves to try out new mediums and step out of their comfort zones and really expose themselves in a way that I’m sure wasn’t entirely comfortable. The overall effect is intense and sometimes it feels a little voyeuristic but in this beautiful totally relatable way. The artist puts a great deal of trust in the observer and that is really inspiring as a fellow creative; to be unabashedly open and honest is always the goal."

About Sophie Flack & Semper Augustus
Sophie is a writer, former dancer with New York City Ballet, and longtime advocate for social justice.
In early 2022 Sophie was introduced to the inner workings of New York City's Diamond District. When Roe v. Wade was overturned she realized she could help spread the word about self-managed abortion by creating jewelry inspired by the abortion pills. She'd finally found a way to combine her various skills to create something entirely new that had the potential to spark societal change.
Each piece begins with Sophie composing a pencil and watercolor drawing in her lower Manhattan studio, a short walk from the Diamond District where she works closely with her bench jeweler. Semper Augustus donates a portion of proceeds to nonprofits that are impacting positive change, including Fountain House.
