About this Event

Explore the Science Inside Oxford's New Life and Mind Building

Step inside the University of Oxford's newly opened Life and Mind Building for a day of discovery, curiosity, and hands-on science. This exciting Science Fair offers a unique opportunity to explore the groundbreaking research taking place inside one of Oxford's newest research hubs.

Meet the researchers behind the science and discover interactive exhibits spanning biology and experimental psychology.

Alongside the science stalls, enjoy a full programme of activities and events throughout the day, including:

  • Seismic Senses – an immersive exhibition where you can experience the vibrations that animals use to communicate. For a sneak peek look here: Royal Society Exhibition | Animal Vibration Lab
  • Science Escape Room – We invite you in to play our neuroscience-themed escape room, “Escape the Lab: Rogue Brain Takeover”.
All the puzzles in the room are based on real neuroscience research done by scientists at the University of Oxford. The escape room is best suited for people 11+, but there is no scary or inappropriate content, so families with younger children are also welcome. The escape room takes approximately 45 minutes to complete, and you can book a time slot on the day. For a sneak peak look here: WIN Escape Room: Rogue Brain Takeover | Videos & Movies on Vimeo
  • Draw-Along Science Illustration Workshops with Alicia Hayden – learn to communicate science through art.
  • Herbaria Tours (please book add-on tickets) – discover the University's remarkable collections of preserved plants. Suggested minimum age is 12 years. Oxford University Herbaria is an internationally important collection of 1,000,000+ plant specimens sampled from across the globe. It is the oldest such scientific collection in Britain and attracts hundreds of researchers each year. This tour will introduce the collection and show how specimens, that may be hundreds of years old, are having impact in modern scientific discussions.
  • Art Exhibition – showcasing science through the lens of a researcher who is also an artist.
  • Independent Film Festival Screenings – Watch Conservation Optimism present inspiring and empowering stories from across the natural world from the Good Natured Short Film Festival.
  • Expert Panel Discussion (please book add-on tickets) – We'll end our day with a panel discussion with researchers from both Experimental Psychology and Biology asking the question across animals, humans and artificial intelligence 'What is Intelligence? '. Recommended for age 12+.

Whether you're a science enthusiast, a family looking for an inspiring day out, or simply curious about the research happening inside the Life and Mind Building, there's something for everyone.

Come and explore, ask questions, meet researchers, and discover the science shaping our understanding of life and the mind.

We look forward to welcoming you!
