About this Event
When the nearly 50-year-old Brooklyn Academy Music building burned down in 1903, plans were quickly drawn up to have its replacement be bigger and bolder than anything Brooklyn had ever seen. Only a couple years later, the vision came true with a magnificent center for the arts featuring an ornate ballroom, 5,000-square-foot grand foyer, and grand Opera House boasting 2,200 seats. How has the academy grown and adapted to support the arts in the 20th and 21st centuries, and what historic structures still remain? It's time to get up close and personal with one of Brooklyn's ultimate hidden gems in a way that few others have before.
Join New York Adventure Club for a special behind-the-scenes visit to the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), America’s oldest performing arts institution (1861) and thriving urban arts complex presenting performing arts, media, and film.
Led by the BAM Archives Manager, our private exploration of several historic buildings and will include:
- An in-depth overview of BAM and the facility’s rich history and story
- A peek at historic photos and newspaper clippings throughout the centuries
- An exploration of the Peter Jay Sharp Building (1907), which features a 5,000 square foot grand foyer, 2,200 seat grand opera house, concert hall, BAM Rose Cinemas, and former ballroom
- A visit to the Harvey Theater (1904) — originally known as The Majestic, this theater sat abandoned for nearly two decades before an award-winning 1987 renovation revived the space while preserving original architectural elements as well as its pre-restored look
See you there!
